Your Costa Rica expedition provides excellent cross-curricular opportunities to combine Biology with Geography, Environmental Studies, Modern Languages, Economics and World Development. The trip will enhance your learning in the following A-Level, IB and Scottish Highers subjects through practicals, fieldwork, lectures and participatory seminars:

There are further cross-curricular opportunities with additional subjects covering similar topics, such as AS Global Development, A-Level Citizenship, and Anthropology.

The Global Action office can clarify which topics under different examination boards for England and Wales (AQA, EdExcel, Salters, OCR, WJEC) and Scotland (Scottish Highers SQA) are covered in the expedition.

Coursework and University Entry

A Global Action expedition to Costa Rica will benefit a student by enhancing their coursework, university and job applications. Our programme has been specifically designed to:

  • Enhance participants' in-depth understanding of the above topics. This includes completing curricular course work research for essays, and fulfilling fieldwork requirements.
  • Enhance participants' university application or job interviews. Students can use their ASDAN Universities Award (see below), Costa Rica field research and work with scientists for their UCAS Personal Statement and university entrance interviews, helping them to stand out from the crowd.
  • Facilitate growth in participants' key skills in leadership, teamwork, and self-reliance through adventurous and challenging activities, all of which are highly valued by potential employers.

The Universities Award

Due to the high educational value of our programmes, your achievements will be rewarded! Each student completing a Global Action expedition receives the widely-recognised ASDAN Universities Award.

The ASDAN Universities Award is highlighted by UCAS for applicants to mention in the personal statement of their UCAS form. Students have found that the Universities Award has made a significant difference to their UCAS Application.

The Universities Award comprises 6 modules: Work Related Activities; Career Planning; Global Awareness; Active Citizenship; Enrichment Activities; Extended Project. Like the students who complete the University of Oxford's Summer School, all participants who complete the Global Action Programme will automatically receive the Universities Award.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Global Action can easily include extended essay topics and elements of CAS as part of your Costa Rica expedition.

Extended Essay: While this is based on a research question chosen by the candidate, the Global Action office can offer a list of suggested research questions that could be covered on the Costa Rica expedition, acting as a foundation for the Extended Essay. For example:

  • How do you estimate sloth populations?
  • Why are cloud forests so important from a biodiversity perspective?
  • How is scientific research contributing to sustainable environmental policy in Costa Rica?

CAS: The rainforest and sea turtle conservation activities can be used for students' 'service' element; the rainforest and two volcano treks can be used for the 'active' element of CAS.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Although EPQ is supervised by school, we can help students to observe a research topic relevant to the Costa Rica context. Global Action can provide a list of suggested research questions, as per the IB Extended Essay (see above).
